Last week, I developed a career toward the company and the job position I would want to work with after NUA. This was done by researching various games companies and looking at the entry-level jobs they offer. Once I found something, I then wrote a plan on what skills I would need to learn while studying at NUA to get the requirement I needed for that job.

After this, I started working on the group presentation about ways toward getting into the games industry by using the information I had researched from developing my career and bringing this across to the presentation. One area that I felt would be important to deliver in the presentation was networking with developers around the UK. I researched the topic of networking and discovered two specific events in the UK, Develop: Brighton and EGX. Develop: Brighton is a UK developer conference that hosts many different talks from developers. EGX is a big trade show where you can try out games hosted by AAA publishers/developers and indies.

Figure 1 (Self Generated.)

From comparing both the events, I feel that Develop: Brighton would ideally be the best event to network with developers because lots of developers ranging from AAA and indie attend, which gives many options to network with. Also, the events offer much knowledge about the games industry, such as how to get started as an indie studio or hot topics brought up recently, such as metaverse and monetisations being some examples. And looking a bit more into the topics myself I mentioned, these are areas I do find interesting to look at because of how much monetisations has changed and how the pandemic brought more of the metaverse toward the industry.

With all the information prepared and collected from the other With all the information prepared and collected from the other group members, it was time to deliver the presentation. Before doing so, it was ideal to practice seeing the presentation’s flow before delivering it to a live audience. During the practice, I noticed that the slide’s order was off because the original order would have required me to speak for a significant amount of time without a break, which would make it difficult for me to deliver my information clear. We fixed the order around this to ensure I would have a speaking break to relax my voice before speaking, and it worked much better to the overall flow.

By practising the presentation, we were more prepared to deliver the presentation to a live audience, and overall I think the presentation went very well. The audience liked how informative the information was toward getting into the industry but lacked many illustrative images. I can agree with this piece of feedback as I felt that it felt too text-heavy to look at when I looked back at the presentation myself. One way this could be resolved was to include statistics around employment during covid and a slide about what you are currently doing. The reason for this was that these areas were covered in other group presentations, but it was also inspiring to look at and could benefit from making the presentation easier to follow through, showing stats on employment during covid and what projects you are working on.

Lastly, I decided to reflect on my performance and the team’s overall presentation from finishing the presentation. With how I performed, I feel like I was prepared to deliver my parts to the audience because I recorded some notes down on my phone to where I always refer to them whenever I need them. As I had experience delivering a presentation in the past before, I feel like this was one of my best performances I had delivered.

With the overall team performance, I feel like they did an excellent job delivering all their information to the audience and how engaging they were using the cake comparison at the presentation’s start toward the discussion. For example, the audience was asked the questions of what their favourite cake and the response was very positive, and it really helped to keep them focused around the presentation.

Figure 2 (Self Generated.)

Figure 3 (Self Generated.)

One criticism to the team and myself is setting up some project management by setting up tasks and arranging meetings to discuss the tasks. This would benefit the overall engagement between the team, but it would also prepare us for doing project management around developing games as games development does require breaking down all the tasks needed to develop a game fully.

Welcome to week 2 on the Industry Awareness project.
